Our college counselor jokes that when we were applying many decades ago there were barely 100,000 people who knew where Northeastern was.
Many decades ago, MIT was a vocational school.
Welcome to the 21st century.
In 1995, MIT had a 35% acceptance rate. Back then, engineering/STEM wasn't a "hot" field.

This list originated on Reddit and was posted by a random kid who dug up the stats on websites. Most have not even been posted officially and are an estimate based off last year's stats and comments made by admissions officers on tours, accepted student days, etc.
Basically proof that you shouldn't take everything you read online as gospel truth.
But it is known that all the schools that converted to 'Test Optional' will see a rise in percent acceptance due to kids pivoting away to TO schools since they don't have the scores in range for acceptance. That has not been disputed and is playing out. Other schools in the same academic range not requiring test scores are seeing a surge in applicants. Selectivity does not connotate rigor or quality of student body.

Emory is only 9.5%.
Oxford’s acceptance rate is higher but it is becoming more selective as it’s getting harder for kids to get into more competitive schools. Academically, Oxford students are comparable to the ones at Emory’s main campus.
