I have a UCLA student. This is true, but the school is vastly expanding their use of triple dorm rooms. Plenty of kids navigate that living situation just fine, but it is tight and can be depressing if you’re paired with anyone who isn’t a good roommate or unkind. I’ve heard some horror stories. My kid doesn’t love it there, it’s a tough place to navigate, but they’re powering through.
My DD at UCLA loves her roommates. She picked them off the Instagram and talked to them before committing. This helps. A bad roommate situation can sully any school. Some schools (Wesleyan) has a lot of single options. But this can be lonely.

Also, assuming OP is local or local-ish to DCUM, you need to add in the cost of flights to and from UCLA for kid and parents if they want to visit.

UNC was higher than UVA prior to this year, these are all very comparable and this spread isn’t significant.
Agree 100%. Was responding to the person who said "you wish" about them being peer schools. (And that maybe UNC was but UVA wa not.)

I would pick UNC. My son is loving it there. (He's from the DC metro area.) We had no experience with it prior to his applying. But we all now agree that it is a wonderful school.
