Or maybe she spent the last 20 years squirreling away money he’s not aware of.

She got married at age 20?

Op here. Her lawyer said the same thing that she could be entitled to about $20k/year of spousal support but didn’t take it. She was married in late teens.

Only thing I could think of is that she didn’t want to deal with the abusive ex.

Why do you care? She'd have to pay taxes on it and it might not have been worth it.

That's not true, the recipient does not pay taxes on spousal support.

Unclench Sir

What does it mean? Let her go?

Op is trying to understand if there could be bigger issues and not if he should break up with her.

Oh boy- there’s a lot to that story. She got the boot after cheating most likely.

I left with nothing.

He was violent.

If I ever dated someone who told me his ex left with nothing, I would turn and run the other way.

Is that or her salary the deal breaker for you ?

+1

OP is annoyed he doesn’t get the fruits of a sweet divorce settlement.

Two years of marriage with no kids wouldn’t result in a king’s ransom anyway.

Hey OP—how much do you make? He won’t answer.

It’s 22 years of marriage and not 2. Op fixed that

Anonymous wrote:My gf, 42, didn’t take anything in previous divorce from her ex husband with whom she was married for almost 2 years. He was the high earner but it seems odd to me that she wouldn’t take her portion in house, pension, savings, 401k, spousal support, etc. Her lawyer insisted that she should ask for spousal support but she decided against it. I asked her and she replied that she don’t want to do anything with his money. Her income is $60-70k.

Sounds 100% fake. Or, there was no money.

Dh and I earn the same. I can’t imagine taking anything from him like alimony or child support. We’d each take our own 401ks and split the savings account in half.

Anonymous wrote:They were married for less than two years. If they split that quickly and she refused financial support, he was probably abusive on some level and she wanted to cut ties completely.

I’d respect her decision and leave it alone.

This. The only people I know who left with nothing in a divorce are all women whose husbands were abusive on some level and were using the divorce as a weapon.
