DD Teacher or school haven't communicated anything officially yet. Has anyone got any communication from your respective schools ?

My child said they heard that some kids had figured out how to stop the timer to get more time. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I didn’t totally follow how he said it happened. I thought everyone started and ended at the same time but I guess it’s different on the computer.

Yes I agree getting rid of IAAT is good in some way, yet the decision should have certainly made at the start of the year . Many kids in DD class was anxious coz the class had the Iowa buzz for a week before the test and now feel bad after hearing the news .

I don’t know- but my oldest passed advanced easily (I think 550 or so) got an 82 on the iaat. She didn’t prep at all (didn’t want to) and was thrown off by the timing of it.

She didn’t really want to take algebra in 7th anyway, for various reasons, but the stupid iaat meant she didn’t really have a choice (I wasn’t going to push the school without good reason).

My next kid prepped some and got a very high score on iaat (and usually aces the sol) but actually struggles more in math on a day to day basis than my oldest.

I think getting rid of the Iowa is great, because it was unnecessary and did actually prevent some kids who were ready from taking algebra in 7th

I teach 5th AAP and talked with our 6th AAP teacher about this news. She wondered if they were finding that the IAAT was superfluous due to the requirement for a pass advanced on the grade 7 math SOL.

For the most part, kids at our school who don’t score high enough on the IAAT would be ineligible anyway because they don’t get a pass advanced on the SOL.

My guess is that this isn’t going to change things for most kids. Now if they drop the SOL requirement to a pass proficient, that’s a different matter.

Are they atleast going to release the scores ? Some folks in DCUM mentioned that they got the scores a month after their kids wrote it last year (test on paper) . This year everything is changing so what’s the plan?

Isn't E3 refers to level III?. can level III students take IAAT ? when ?

What is E3?

Math teachers have been saying a blanket acceleration of math is a bad idea for years. This 2013 article from National Council of Teachers of Mathematics still holds true- not all kids are ready, but the ship has sailed, the train has left the station, School Boards not listening.

When did E3 start? 2021 or 2022? At the time there was talk of 5 year plan for 8th grade algebra. If started 2021, then maybe that is why FCPS getting rid of test to be able to hit the markets- whether good for kids or not.

Algebra I in 7th grade is a terrible idea for most kids. Even the smart ones.
