I think the Cotswolds could be boring for teens. It depends on their personalities. But if you want to celebrate them as part of the trip, take them someplace exciting, someplace they’d be proud to share with their friends/Instagram. That is their reality. Don’t make it about your middle aged travel goals. You’ll have plenty of time for empty nest trips soon enough.


I love the Cotswolds and still agree with this.

With teens, I’d try to take them out of the Europe circuit and do South America or East Africa instead. I think it would be a great experience for them and open them up to new places. The benefit of South America is the flight is shorter and don’t have the jet lag issues.

3 bases in Italy with day trips in between. Hug the coast if you can so you get some beach time. Or do 2 base cities with 1 somewhere further afield on the coast.

Watch a YouTube video on Sail Croatia. Those trips look awesome if you love the water. You port in cute cities with lots of history.

There are other luxury boats that cater to different ages.

Fly in and/or out of Geneva or Zurich. Spend a night or two upon arrival, to recover from jet lag, walk around the city, take a lake steamer cruise. see the local sightes. Then, take trains into and through the Alps for the rest of the time. Switzerland's specially designated scenic trains go through terrific scenery. The Glacier Express and Bernina Express are perhaps the best known. Good places to spend a few days for hiking include Zermatt, Murren, and Wengen. Look them up and see if they sound appealing. I'd plan to spend at least three nights in any location, since with travel time you'll really end up with only one full day in each place.


This is a great sugggestion/itinerary. We have done this trip a couple of times and enjoyed it.
For Italian lakes + mountains, I would suggest flying into Venice and then spending time in Lake Garda (beautiful, more laid back than Lake Como) and then travelling to the Dolomites. This is easiest done with driving yourself between places but the driving is very easy.

Everyone keeps mentioning the Cotswolds -- but those are pretty much a one day thing, two at the most.

I think the best options you are seeing here are Hawaii and Swiss/French Alps.

I'll suggest something a bit different as well -- our last big milestone trip was safari in Tanzania. Ten days is perfect.

4-5 days in Wengen, 2 days in Montreaux and 3 days in Lucern. Unlimited travel pass for trains.

We are going to Ireland late July and early August, similar 10 day trip. Ireland has beautiful scenery and Dublin has great food.
