We have wood countertops in our home, and I love the look! We don't have issues with stains because ours are sealed. I love that it's not so cookie cutter and it brings so much warmth to the room. Good luck convincing your husband!

My parent's beach house has a section of countertop that is cherry wood. It is absolutely gorgeous and it was sealed with some kind of bulletproof sealant so it looks amazing (not super shiny, but just has a hint of glow). This is a side counter area, and it's where we sit to eat with bar stools, so we don't use it for food prep. The rest of the counters are off-white Corian. I would love to get something similar in my house.

You shoudn't be much worried about bacteria on wood butcher block; they actually die when the wood is dried.

We have wooden countertops and I HATE having them around the sink. Every drop of water is a potential stain.
