I don't think people are saying the kids lose their discipline and commitment to playing soccer for the team. But the social dynamic is a mess. Kids (and their parents) who view themselves as moving up can develop toxic egos. Kids who are being cut are either mad as hell or dejected. The kids are less committed to their social relationships with teammates who won't be on the same team next year. It is ridiculous and unnecessary (except for the club's interests). Also, at young ages, kids are developing rapidly. A borderline U11 kid could decisively move up or down in the depth chart over a Spring season and summer.

The Toxicity is the Parents fault

Kids raised right would make the new team and still show up at the current team as if nothing happened to finish out the season at 100%

More like, we are trying to make a move for the next season. Not abandoning anyone.

How do you showcase your skills if you can’t attend another team in the same leagues practices?

This is my issue. I don’t care if kids are doing practices on the side etc and know they will be leaving - I have 2 kids both have had to toxic behavior begin the minute a kids gets a higher level offer and states I made X and you made Y - so I am better than you.

Maybe at older ages as kids are in HS season it makes sense but coaches can only stop it by benching the kids which is then seen as punishing them for switch clubs next year and most parents don’t hear or see it or aren’t receptive - twice I brought it up and the parent said well my kid is better than yours so they shouldn’t be humble.

It’s tied to the offer physically being received so early on that drives me nuts

Can an ECNL player go to another ECNL clubs training sessions? How does that work?

Our clubs season ends a week before tryouts. 1 week is not enough for new coach to see my kid?

I agree with the sentiments in this thread (March is too early, and it disrupts teams), but no matter what rules you put in place, there will be ways around them.

If clubs want to look at players in January and talk to players/families, there are lots of ways.

What benefit is it to the club to have 17 roster spots locked up in March vs May when the season doesn't start until Aug - it's not like you can start playing as the new team

This must be your first travel season. Clubs need to organize and secure players. The top leagues are very competitive and the earlier you can secure a player, the better.

I understand that top leagues are competitive, secure the player earlier, blah blah blah - you still didn't answer why can't this happen in June? If it was a rule across GA, MLSNext, ECNL, June 1 offers (like it is for March 1) - there would be zero reason then to have tryouts/offers in March. If you say "March is before June and clubs don't want to wait until June" - i would counter, then why are they waiting until March? Why not start in January really get in there early.

By rule, March 1 is the first day ECNL teams can begin tryouts in Virginia. I'm not sure about GA and MLSN but I would imagine it's the same since they are all competing against each other for talent.

Even after a club thinks the roster is set, there are still player movements because a player may have received a better offer from another club. There are parents that are willing to pay hundreds of dollars to hold a spot at multiple clubs and then decide which club they want to join. Players will move around as late as May before going on summer break.

The ECNL tryout date is May 1 nationally. Northern Virginia is March 1 because GA does not have a tryout date. GA clubs were having tryouts in January. It would be good if GA and ECNL could get on the same page for a date.

its almost like we need a real law saying "you cannot bind someone or require anypayment more than X months before the youth league starts"

Yea, our team lost 3 girls and got 3 new ones already for next year. We are going to be U15 next year and with fall HS soccer these kids won’t really be joining the team until mid October. Not sure if a bunch of superstars decide they want to play for us. Do we go to 21 players? Do we cut that late? Crazy

There is a logical and very straight forward reason to have tryouts for a fall season in March:

SECURE THY BAG.

Why are you still thinking we foreign coaches care about Larla’s development or Johnny’s training?
