If this keeps up and gets out in the news, it is going to destroy the US tourism industry and many other things.
There are lots of possibilities: drugs; questionable cash; other contraband; criminal record;
Deny entry

These are not good examples in my opinion. I don’t doubt there’s abuse of power but these examples, so far, are weak. Maybe I have less pity because the same thing happened to my European family member. It sucked and my family member had a hard time returning to their country after 30 years away but they broke the law. Meanwhile, Americans are forced to move heaven and earth to legally move abroad because of strict laws. You can’t have double standards.
Then deny entrance at the border and she can stay in Mexico. Or book her a flight (at her expense) the next day. Why keep her in custody for two months? Why place her in solitary confinement for weeks? That's either incompetence or cruelty.
Exactly. If denied entry, the person is usually put on a plane back to their country. They’re not detained for 2 weeks (at taxpayer’s expense!)

According to you, Melania and Elon should be stripped of their citizenship, disappeared for a few weeks and then off to an AI in El Salvador.

What is new is that before, the US would simply deny entry. The detentions are unnecessary and over the top. That is what is spooking people.
