Just rumors, although the anonymous people on this forum seem pretty sure about it. No official communication has been sent about this last minute switch. The FCPS website still indicates that the IAAT is used for Algebra 7 placement.

Starting this fall? How do they change their class registration then since they already submitted it? When and how would school communicate with students about this change then?


Teacher here. The only threshold will be pass adv on math 7 SOL. They should have decided this before administering the test. Very annoying.


That is very annoying. The kids in my child’s class have been worried about this test for months. I guess it will make them stronger in the end but still… I don’t like the lack of communication to parents and the last minute switch.

Last yr, DC took IAAT on 2/27 and we had results in SIS on 4/4. So 5.5 weeks after the test.

I guess administering IAAT isn’t a total waste - it’s another datapoint that some reasonable parents will use to help guide the decision on course selection nxt yr.

Apparently this info will be shared with parents when scores are released. The middle schools will contact the same way except now IOWA won’t be a prerequisite, just a pass advanced.

There is a thread in the FCPS forum on the IAAT. Several Teachers have said that they are not going to have prereqs for Algebra in 7th grade next year, it will be open enrollment. Someone also posted that they will offer Algebra and Algebra Honors. So who knows if the IAAT scores even matter this year.

I’d bet, like with most things in FCPS, every school has a different way of delivering scores. My son’s score posted on SIS last year before we ever received a paper copy. (Haycock)

I've been told that at least 2 years ago an email went out to the parents of students who were close to the cutoff but didn't make it (at Carson) asking them if they wanted to take algebra 1. Not sure if it was a 1 off that year as the classes weren't full or if this is something they usually do...
