Is the size of the school the issue or the fact many kids who can bearly make a Rec team are trying out?
Some kids who had only played rec soccer made the JV team last year at our school. Some kids who had played club were cut.

Just speculation (there are probably many reasons), but being a male athlete for your high school can be a pretty big social deal.
