My DS attends JMU along with about 15 other admits from his high school class. He never - ever - sees any of them.
My DD attends JMU along with more than 25 others from her HS class and some older and sees them all the time - isn’t friends with any BTW but she advises that can feel like 13th grade sometimes. Many of the girls joined the same sororities. Older DD said same of Tech.

My MCPS kid flat-out refused to even apply. Honestly, I couldn't blame her. I wouldn't have wanted to go to school in the next suburb over when I was 18, either.
UMD CS is top 20. Thrown in merit aid, and it's a no brainer. If you didn't want to go to a T20 school because you might see some kids from your HS in a school that has like 40K students, then you were too immature to make that call.
Well, my kid isn’t a CS major, and there were plenty of better schools for the majors she was considering.
I wanted—and she wants—to get out of my bubble and experience more of the world. Its not just the other students, but the environment as a whole.

Besides a few kids already in, there are probably 20 others waiting to hear. Having 10 other kids from the school all together and dealing with rush etc doesn't seem super appealing.
Curious if anyone pivoted based on this.
Anonymous wrote:My DC did not go to UMD-CP, but a large cohort from their MCPS high school did. My kid says many of them just hang out with their same friend group from HS and haven’t really branched out. It is too easy to stay in your comfort zone if you don’t have to put yourself out there and meet new people.

Want to guess which school I ended up loving when I visited? And where I never ended up seeing any of my HS classmates who also attended?
Let your kids make their own decisions, but these schools are huge, and the whole "13th grade" thing really isn't.
