I wish they would come out with their recommendations soon, so we can finalize private school for our DC.

Are there any proposed maps yet? I haven't been following this since we don't live at the edge of a district but also don't want my high schooler to have to switch schools.

I haven't written all school board members and the superintendent multiple times on this targeted issue. From the superintendent's team I got a straight out lie back that "there had been no decisions yet made about boundary changes or grandfathering". I promptly replied with a highlighted version of 8130 that had been approved and only includes seniors. Got back a "well, they can still decide to include more than seniors".

Sure, can, but will they? I doubt it.

I've written to Sandy Anderson multiple times and gotten back form letters than address nothing that I specifically ask her stance on.

Our in person meeting at LBSS was LIVID when people found out only seniors are grandfathered to any changes. I've said before, we are on the line for a potential boundary shift from WSHS to Lewis or SoCo. I will be incredibly angry and do anything I can to keep my 2028 grad at WSHS for his junior and senior year. He is a freshman now, already signed up for AP sophomore courses not offered at Lewis. He's an athlete that is putting his time in on his JV team to build to varsity. He is in several clubs now and looking at leadership positions down the road. Pulling the rug out from under juniors is unbelievable.
Now, my 2031 grad, we will try Lewis if we are moved with an open mind. If they keep IB, he's a great candidate for it. And maybe he'll do better at a less competitive school than WSHS. We can make it work, regardless. But, no moving juniors. That's insane.

I am 100% with you! I have a class of '28 DC who lettered in a sport this winter. We were looking at letterman jackets recently and thought about how the SB might force a move. It's heartbreaking to think that adults would do this to teenagers at such a critical point in their education. The lack of empathy is staggering.

Robin Lady says these kids are too soft and it will toughen them up to move schools.

She has grown kids who went to Marshall HS and one went into UVA and the other to Duke. She revealed this personal info about her kids at a public event after one of her comments (I’m paraphrasing) about “all your kids will be fine no matter what school they end up at, all the FCPS schools are great.”

That's news to me. Are you sure it was Robyn Lady? Well, if it is true, I bet her kids did not have to change schools.
And, how many children does Michelle Reid have?

Yes, I’m positive it was her

I think you misinterpreted her. Lady was initially a counselor at Marshall. She was likely talking about her students.
Search her bios. She never mentioned kids until she ran for School Board after she got married. Until then she never mentioned any kids.

"When possible, adjustments under this policy shall be implemented through attrition and phasing. The School Board may approve a grade-by-grade phase-in of adjustments for students beginning with the incoming class at the middle or high school levels, when feasible. The School Board may adopt other phasing plans as appropriate to the individual boundary study. Parents of rising sixth (or fifth) graders, eighth graders, and twelfth graders affected by a boundary change may, at the discretion of the School Board, be provided the option of having their students remain in the school they attended prior to the change."

This leaves with the School Board with total discretion. They are not committing to grandfather rising seniors ("may, at the discretion of the School Board") nor are they foreclosing themselves from grandfathering more high school students ("for students beginning with the incoming class at the * * * high school levels, when feasible").

They preferred to give themselves total discretion when it comes to boundary changes and grandfathering than to provide families with any assurance that their kids would be able to finish high school at their existing schools. If they are back-tracking now, it's only because people paid attention to what they did.

This lack of commitment is causing families, to include mine, a lot anxiety. We are considering moving from a house we love, if possible, to keep our class of '28 DC in their school.

+1. We have applications out to private high schools. Our youngest two will be directly affected if there's no grandfathering for sophomores or juniors and we are not willing to chance it.

Has anyone on the school board sent their kids to high farms schools?

The majority of the current, elected, school board have expressed their opposition to grandfathering.

I would take them at their word and be prepared to move.

I think I’d home school with private tutors or go private.

She is among the members who has started to reverse course. She's since said all HS kids should be grandfathered at their current schools.

She represents a district (Dranesville) where a lot of people are watching everything the School Board is doing in this space. But she also knows that her SB colleagues will cover for her - if the rest ram through redistricting with little or no grandfathering, Robyn can vote against that or abstain, and it won't change the outcome. It will only allow Robyn to say she voted in accordance with the preferences of her constitutents.

This is exactly right. She was one of the most outspoken against grandfathering. Then, at the last second once the SB had the draft 8130 that would not require grandfathering and enough votes rallied so that it was a done deal, she voted for an amendment that would include grandfathering that was destined to fail.
