I've been to all of these posted and they are OK, some better than others, but none that I would be excited to return to. I suppose I have a higher standard?
I don't think I do but in general I prefer the West for lux resorts. This Woodloch -
https://www.thelodgeatwoodloch.com/ -is prob the closest I've come to that's closest to us in DMV area. I think maybe there's others in upstate NY?
I prefer to spend my money at B&Bs that offer higher quality experiences in spa/dining. Maybe not the larger resorts but for a lot of money, I don't care if it's less and smaller if it's nicer and more enjoyable

These 2 are favorites: www.laubergeprovencale.com and

Not OP, but these are nice options. If I was going away with DH, I’d love one of these if close to DC.
I've been to L'Auberge and the food was truly amazing. You've got to be ready to relax though - it's not for couples who need a lot of activity. The same is true for Woodloch. It's beautiful and the spa is amazing, but some people (mostly the men) look a little bored. I'm putting my own DH in this category. He's great for one night, but then looking for things to do.
Mohonk would get my vote for great hiking and scenery and overall niceness of staff, but I wouldn't call it luxury. I would also say not to discount Greenbrier. Yes, it's inconsistent and some areas need more upkeep, but the staff wants to do the right thing and that's hard to find sometimes. I like the history, the pool, easy hiking, small towns nearby to explore, activities, etc.
