Vandy ED2 pool consists of mostly top20 ED/REA rejects. I can't imagine T30 ED rejects applying ED2 to Vandy.
I agree with you the ED2 applicant pool have higher caliber with high stats.
Even with this high stats pool, they are not taking many out of it.

I attended a Vandy tour and info session and they gave numbers, which I can't remember.
But it was a VERY big boost for ED1, like 20%, a real boost for ED2, like 10%, and an ivy-level number of RD. Like 4%

They’ve deferred ED2 and admitted in RD at our non-DMV private in last cycle. More than 3 kids.
Don't think it’s that unusual. Our CCO said it’s how they round out the class.

My DC applied to an Ivy ED1 and was rejected. ED2 at Vanderbilt (and a VU legacy) and was deferred and then admitted RD. Their top 2 were the Ivy or Vanderbilt but the Ivy only had ED1.
In the end only one student from our area publics got into the ED1 Ivy and that student was a legacy there.

Now, Vandy doesn’t defer many ED2 applicants. ED2+ED2 is still a low number.

But I’m guessing those who are deferred ED2 are ultimately accepted at a higher than average rate RD. If nothing else, the choice to ED2 is a strong signal to Vandy that (1) the kid is likely to accept RD (good for yield); and (2) full pay given they were willing to commit ED2 without considering aid or merit packages from other schools.

When we visited Vanderbilt two years ago, during the info session someone asked about ED II and the admissions person said something very close to: "If you're applying EDII, you better be able to tell us you just landed from Mars or have some other reason why you wouldn't have known about us and applied ED I." It was very off-putting. Don't offer it if students don't have a real shot at being considered. The arrogance of the admissions team was a huge turnoff for our DC, and they took it off their list.
As someone who actually likes the ED offerings, this still makes sense. If you have the finances to be able to ED anywhere and you elect to ED2 somewhere, that school will know that they are the second choice AND you didn't get into your first choice. They absolutely admit some kids under ED2 (and RD) but why is it arrogant for the admissions office to consider that ED2 students are considering Vandy as a runner up/back up/not first choice? After all, they ask what you'll contribute to the college campus community in an essay question...and they already know you weren't pro Vandy from the get go.
It doesn’t make sense. Why have ED2 if you have this attitude? The whole reason to have ED2 is to lock in those Ivy rejects. And why would they look at RD in a better light? Hardly anyone who applies to Vandy RD had it as their first choice.
It makes perfect sense. They have ED2 to mostly get overqualified kids, not just qualified ones. "Those ivy rejects" encompasses a very wide range of applicants.
