They cannot cancel flights due to lack of interest because they need the plane to arrive where it is scheduled to arrive, passengers or not. Otherwise, it causes scheduling conniptions that can reverberate through the entire airline.
US Air used to do that all the time. They typically had two flights per day to any given location and would just put you in the next one. If you missed your connection, it was cheaper for them to put you up in a crap hotel near the airport then fly the plane mostly empty. Happened to me at least 5 times.

Yes. Those avation watchers can figure anything out. It’s American from DCA this morning. Not terribly hard to find.
