Loved Americans. Hated the diplomat (and stopped watching). Stick with Americans till the end — worth it!

The Americans, at least the first few seasons, was one of the best shows ever written and is SO well acted by ALL of the leads. I love Keri Russel and have watched both shows, very different, I liked the Americans better. She is an underrated actress.

I play a lot of classical piano and I know a really well written piece but what I sometimes just want to play is the prettier oneso saying that the Americans is one of the finest shows ever done is really beside the point. It's correct but utter meaningless if someone plain wanted to see something that's more accessible even if it's not technically perfect.
That's life in so many ways.
I don't think The Diplomat is more accessible, it's just poorly done and imo season two made no sense and wasn't relatable at all. I could not buy her as an ambassador. She was so frazzled all the time and had younger, less senior people bossing her around and talking down to her as if they were in charge. It didn't feel plausible to me. Allison Janney was the only good part.

Also, watch the Jesse Stone series of movies - wonderful. And, following up on that, if you like police-mystery type fiction, read anything by the late Robert Parker up to but not including works done in his name by others after his death.His characters, including Jesse Stone, are wide ranging up to and including even Western novels and often include a nice dash of humor.

Go back and watch or rewatch all of NYPD Blue and/or Sopranos.
The Americans was excellent but had kind of a muted tone to me. Loved Homeland - especially before the later episodes.

I love the Diplomat because it's not violent. My husband told me not to watch the Americans because it's too violent for me.
I like British costume drama, where there's almost no violence.
I've been re-watching Madame Secretary, which I'm enjoying. There's political violence, but it's muted.
