They have really good restaurants (better than Portugal). Also, Portugal is very far and it's hard to get over the jet lag. I love Old Town San Juan and the beaches.
I mean, it helps that I've been to both places, but if I hadn't I'd go to whichever one I hadn't seen. New is big for me.
Saying that Puerto Rico has better restaurants than Portugal shows your ignorance.
Or perhaps yours. How much time have you spent in Puerto Rico outside of all-inclusives or similar (which are known for mediocre food world wide.)
I was born in Puerto Rico, lived there until I was through culinary school and moved straight to Portugal where I am now an internally-renowned food critic.

I'm Portuguese (from the mainland) so I'm biased...but I'll throw out another option....the Azores!
Went there for a wedding and came back wishing I had family there so I could justify visiting more often.

Then, stop by Cascais on the train then to Lisbon. Transportation is super easy. We stayed in Lisbon for 3 days and then took a train to Spain. Best trip of my life. Good food, friendly people and beautiful scenery. I want to live there!!
