I'm hearing differently from my friend who works in an aid office. The broadly worded vague memo is putting everyone on edge.


The Office of Financial Aid/Student Financial Services at DCs school sent out a message earlier today saying that they have "not received any guidance that would change our use of federal aid at this time" and are moving forward with the processing and distribution of aid as scheduled until they receive word "from our financial aid policy experts and advocacy organizations, as well as from the Department of Education" that they should do otherwise.

While there is not official confirmation yet, since Pell grants are considered payments to individuals, they may not be impacted.

Student loans also should not be impacted. These loans are taken out by individuals, and even though they are disbursed to schools first, they should proceed normally.

Update At 9am PST: There are some rumors that Federal Student Aid will make an announcement later today that Title IV federal student aid will not be impacted by this order, and we will update if that does occur.

You should read it. It’s (intentionally) unclear what it applies to. But if you’re counting on the “direct aid to individuals” qualifier, you are mistaken. Pell grants are not paid directly to individuals.

THat’s an assumption based on the idea that these are “grants received directly by individuals.” But in fact much of this aid is not “directly received by individuals”; it’s received by institutions, that then disburse it to individuals.

Every article I read has something different listed. One says yes, another says no. And both are from reputable sources.

I reached out to my SIL, who works in the Fin Aid office at a VA university, and her only response was "it's a ducking ship show in here today" so I'm assuming by those auto-corrected words, her work isn't great today.

The media doesn't help with these sensational headlines. Schumer spoke out against it and did point out it was not legal. But now, lawyers will have to be hired to proven it is not legal -- maybe.

If this happens, we will eventually be out of jobs.



I don't think people understand the extent here, if this isn't stopped, the damage will be incalculable. Farm subsidies? Rural hospitals? Any kind of infrastructure projects. I could go on.



Unfortunately, I think things need to grind to a halt, a couple of deaths related to hospital/nursing home funding problems, kids unable to attend college, general catastrophes before all Americans realize how integral the federal government is to everyday life. People are ignorant to what a positive role government plays in their lives.


I fear you’re correct, but the only way it doesn’t come to that is if people are loud now and demand that their representatives do something. A single senator can grind everything to a halt—no Trump nominations until funds are released. Demand that your senator be the person.
