My parents are currently living independently although we pay someone to go in 12 hours per week to try to help them to the extent my mom will allow. But when my father passes I think we will need a different solution for my mother. We would actually pass her around us kids but unfortunately most of us don’t have an accessible bedroom and she can’t do stairs. Does anyone know if these IL or AL facilities will allow you do to a few months at a time, maybe furnished? I would bring her out for a few months and put her in someplace close to me if that were feasible.

Also this is a total aside but in shopping for kitchen appliances I learned that it’s basically impossible to start a fire with new induction stoves/ranges — what a great option for the elderly.

They won't hold the unit for her (unless you pay in full, of course.) So if you move her out, you run the risk that they won't have any availability when you want her to move back in. Also, if her health has changed/deteriorated, they could choose to not accept her back.

the cost goes for $5k per month for 2BR (seems like a great price) to $24k per month for skilled nursing?

Yeah, isn't that crazy? I think that's why I'm so shocked. They landed on this "campus" after my dad had a stroke - he spent a short time in rehab, then a 2 month stint in Assisted Living (a studio was $6k/month, which seemed reasonable) and then to Independent Living where my mom joined him. I never thought the SNF could be so much more expensive. Maybe they're compensating for too many people in Medicaid beds?

Hmm. I think the extra fee is due to the ccrc. Most SNF beds that I looked at that were stand alone and not attached to a CCR were at the 450-480/day cost. NOVA

My mom is not yet in memory care, but she is at a high level of care at Sunrise AL. Rates went up in January so we are now paying about 10,500-11,000/month.

what type of room does she have? (square footage?)

Studio, pretty wide so has sitting area. Room is now -189$/day plus medication daily rate plus care level daily rate.

Thanks Op and others for posting in. I’m about to start this process for my 84 yr old mom. She’s in a wheelchair and almost completely immobilized. Still lives alone in her own home. She can still cook for herself, take showers and do laundry but we are scared of falls. Me and my brother live out of state. We installed cameras all throughout her home but they don’t have audio. My mom is doing just okay, but she is losing her memory fast.

How much are you paying for the 12 hours a week aid? I’d love for her to come live with me but we live in a townhouse with stairs.

There are several wheelchair bound residents at my mom’s memory care. The staff takes very good care of them. In memory care they like the residents to be hanging out together during the day so they’ll get the ones with limited mobility and bring them in to be with the group. My mom is mobile so she can go back to her room throughout the day if she wants. The ones in wheelchairs can too, but they just need to ask a caregiver to take them.

IL usually includes like 7 meals per week. AL includes all food.

It’s so expensive. Right now, my MIL’s mind is okay, but her body is failing so she is rotating among her kids that live in the Deep South. There’s very little in the way of high quality affordable care there. Most of her other kids have flexible jobs or live in extended family/multi-generational households anyway so it is easier for them to care for her. My brother-in-law was able to build an addition quickly so she has a private bathroom now and a wheelchair entrance if she needs it one day. However, once her mind goes and she needs constant supervision, I know we will need to chip in financially for a facility. Unfortunately, OOP expenses related to my dad’s care are tapping me out.

Does she need skilled nursing or something else like memory care?

Her mobility is almost completely gone and she needs help for every task except eating. She's fallen 6 or 7 times since Xmas. We have helpers in their apartment about 6-7 hours/day, so we either need to increase those hours or have her enter the SNF. (Coordinating helpers is a major PITA, as you might imagine!)

I wish someone would clue my 70 year old in laws in to these realities. They have $600k saved and act like it’s $600M and there’s no way they will run out of money.
