London in the 90s. Amazing experience and traveled every weekend since I only had classes Tuesday-Thursday.

Semester at Sea in the 1980s, took classes on the ship, visited 10 countries and literally traveled around the world. Left from the Bahamas final stop in Hong Kong before flying back to San Francisco. Yes, fully accredited, and the most amazing experiences.

No but I did have an interview for an internship with someone working in what was sort of the Russian Congress at the time. After the intetrvirw I refused to intern for him because he was clearly a crazy person. So that may have taken me out of the running to be an asset!I I remember it was also a whole thing that I had showed up to the interview in the parliament building without my passport and they were all mad about that.

I did a fellowship in Ukraine in the 00s and can only imagine how things were just a decade before.


Not study abroad but grad-school-related professional experience in 2000 traveling with 3 other students to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Dnepropetrovsk, Saratov, and Krasnodar. It was great fun even at its downscale worst.

We went to Yalta for a break, gojng through Ukraine (can’t even remember which country claimed Yalta at that point). It was during a brief moment when the Ukrainian money could just be printed out on a color printer or copier so the currency was so devalued that everything was basically free. I don’t think that lasted more than a week or so — obviously people stopped taking it PDQ—but that was just one example. Every day was a new example of “how can this possibly be true…..”. I’m still about 80% convinced that my study abroad program was run by drug (and other things) smugglers, with CIA plants as well.


PP here. Yep, I believe every single aspect of this story.

I studied abroad in Russia in the late 90’s and it was definitely interesting!

Same rules apply as in states, no drinks she didn’t watch get poured by from bartender or open bottle herself- whether water or anything else. Always have cell phone charged and set up for international plan. Always carry phone, money and US consulate number everywhere.
