I justified it by buying something that had major zippers and pockets crafted well. I will never need another one again.

I can afford whatever I want however not need to buy 10 by one .

IMO, the discount at the Real Real and other consignment sellers isn’t enough to risk the item being fake or getting an item that’s even the slightest bit worn. For 20% more, I prefer to go to the store and buy the item new. If the discount was 40% or more, then I’d reconsider.


I agree with this. I think shops like realreal are great for clothes. But for bags, I would just rather pay full price and get what I want. Most of the really cut price designer bags are either a bit worn out or aren’t a design that most people like. Also, I am hard on my bags - I buy expensive but I expect them to last me a long time with frequent use. I don’t like to have a lot of bags on my closet.

This is exactly it. It's an existential problem. Who are you? Are you a person who carries a $3K bag? My net worth is higher than yours, and I am not a person who carries a $3k bag. But I am a person who spends $600 on a Bottega bag from the Real Real, because I like the quiet luxury and classic quality. This is why I don't have breast implants. Because I don't want to be (or rather I am NOT) the person with breast implants.

YOLO but seriously, buy a non brand good quality alternative and use rest of the money to buy a nice wool coat, a supple cashmere sweater and a silk dress.

Don’t quibble about fakes. When the luxury brands are importing poorly paid Chinese labor into Italian sweat houses and the replica factories are putting more effort into QC than whoever’s in charge at Chanel, it becomes a distinction without a difference. Pay what you think the bag is worth and be happy. Whether you find that price at Tysons II, or the Real Real, or Taobao, it’s all the same materials and labor at this point.

When I feel guilty about splurging for something, I wait a month or so. If I’m still thinking about it, then I really want the item and feel it’s justified. If I move on, then it’s not something I really wanted and would have been an impulse buy.

I can think of two items I didn’t buy that years later I still regret- a deep purple Burberry jacket in a style and color I haven’t seen since and a Gucci belt with a bumble bee buckle that was only sold in the Gucci Museum store in Florence. It’s silly bc buying both of these items wouldn’t have impacted my financial well being at all and instead I waste head space wishing I had treated myself.
