OP, what about Loyola Maryland? We are VA residents but it’s an option we’re considering. Medium size Jesuit school in north Baltimore. Solid possibility for B students and they’re generous with merit. Pretty campus too!

Not VA but close. What about Elon? They may not be able to bring the cost down to where you want it, but it sounds like it could be a fit if they can.

We visited this year, and it seems to be a bit more ROVA, but not right wing. There are many nursing and teaching majors, and the nursing program is competitive. Your child will know professors and is less likely to be lost in the cracks. The students seemed very average, and I mean that in a good way. I think there are opportunities there if your child will take them.

Open to a degree. Cost is a factor. Kid could be interested in WVU if they get merit. Also interested in bigger schools like Univ of TN and South Carolina (again need merit).

If the choice is nursing, then you can evaluate how students are admitted to the school vs how they are admitted to the nursing program. Some schools are “direct admit” and some schools are not. Some schools list objective requirements for entry into the nursing program and some schools don’t/can’t. Further, all schools report the performance of their students on the NCLEX exam. Some schools that seem to hit above their weight on the NCLEX are Longwood and Shenandoah.

There are a finite number of Virginia state schools. If you’re opening the search to private schools, why limit yourself to Virginia?

Quinnipiac and Xavier both have excellent health care programs, tons of school spirit, and lots of B average applicants. Both (and many other privates) will use merit aid to bring annual tuition closer to Virginia in-state rates. AOs are not stupid — they look at your return address and know what your kid’s options are.

CNU is small and the social life is boring. YMMV

I find this page very helpful for understanding the breath of Virginia public and private institutions and the median GPA and SAT for most of them.
