I’m asking for people to share their experiences. I’m obviously googling too. You don’t seem to understand the purpose of a forum. Thailand is also overwhelming if you google because there are so many beautiful beach towns.

What have you actually gotten out of this thread that you couldn’t get from Google? Most people are just listing places.

I agree with the Japan suggestion, but flight costs will be an issue. And jet lag is REAL. Japan can be very reasonable once you're there.

We took two weeks this past spring break with my then 5 and 10 year olds. We had loads of fun and it was easy to mix up the activities so that everyone was happy. The only thing the kids found boring was the national museum in Tokyo - I thought they'd be into all the samurai garb and swords, but no such luck.

The key question here is what kind of vacation your kids and your whole family enjoy. My kids are similar ages to yours and we realized that vacations centered on urban settings are not setting them up for success. So we do more nature/hiking/animal focused trips. One of our upcoming trips will be focused on snorkeling, and for that we're thinking Curacao or St. John. Knowing what activities your kids enjoy would help with ideas.

Agree. Our best family vacation was to Greece because the kids were both really interested in it (each for different reasons.)

I have to admit that my favorite vacations as a kid were spent in cheap hotels crispy as a french fry washing and sorting the shells I'd picked up. And yes, we went to Guatemala and Mexico and Yellowstone too, but nothing beat those cheap beach vacations.

The athenee hotel in Bangkok is good as is the Shangri-La. Chang Mai up north is great and you can see elephants. sorry I don't have a good island recommendation that is off the beaten path but I'm sure there is one.

Over Thanksgiving week, Germany is amazing as the holiday markets open. You can base yourselves in Munich and take day trips (including Salzburg, Austria) from there.

Croatia and Slovenia? There is coastline, natural beauty (Plitvice, Lake Blec), affordable food and wine, history. And if your family liked Game of Thrones, you will adore Dubrovnik.

Japan. The dollar is strong against the yen and $500/night hotels are quite nice.
