Which is why I posted what I did. I have taken a look at the faculty backgrounds of many schools, and JMU was a pleasant surprise!

JMU is pretty difficult to get into if you’re from NOVA. The Va public colleges are pretty upfront about the geographic quotas. We know two families that kids were rejected by JMU and VT but got into UMD and Penn St. I have another friend whose daughter got rejected from VT and ended up going to Duke. Your son needs to apply to safety school. It doesn’t make sense but that’s the way it is. Good luck.

3.85 gpa and 1480 SAT. Is at an OOS school now, with merit, and kicking a$$.

I don't know what your point is. The only part of the above exchange I (OP) posted, is the original question.
Still, like the other person you're responding to, I wouldn't know how to find the info you say should be at our fingertips.
Regardless, I'm trying to determine whether there are high-performing students similar to my child who are still getting rejected by JMU.

Is it easier to get into JMU from out of state (MD)? It’s my child’s first choice with 3.8 weighted.

OP here. Stats are well in line with the ranges posted on school website. On paper, it's a perfect fit for my child's interests, preferences, and needs. But that doesn't mean acceptance is guaranteed. I'm trying to find out if others in the ranges are being denied, or what it takes to not get accepted. They can't accept everyone.

OP. I wish I could. I didn't say my kid was rational. They did apply to two other schools; but I think both of them are more competitive than JMU. JMU has always been described as most students' "safety" school and my student's stats are very good (4.0 unweighted GPA, several AP classes, test optional - ok, but not great SAT score).

Exactly. And I don’t have a kid at JMU - but it seems to be a school where the kids who go there feel overwhelmingly positive. My child’s dermatologist went there, and I know successful people in a range of fields that are happy alums. I do think the name recognition is best in the DC area so that something to keep in mind but there’s no reason a kid can’t go to JMU and have a good life.

I do know of two kids rejected last year, one with a 3.7 weighted and one with a higher weighted gpa (close to 4 but not sure of exact number). Common thread to the extent there was one could be that neither had a lot of APs.

Yes, weighted. Yes, rejected.
His school didn't offer many AP classes. He took one AP class (Comparative Government) his sophomore year and got a 5 on the exam.
They offered IB classes and he took several, but I don't remember what his scores were.

Agree. If you're applying to JMU might as well shoot your shot to VT and try and get into the t75.
