About a mile from the beach area there is a nice gated community https://www.qhycc.com/home/
But it's in Florida. Blech.
Queen’s Harbor is very nice but dated and there are nicer places in the area.
This is a beautiful community, family oriented and better schools.

Santa Barbara has a crappy little airport and you have to fight a lot of traffic to get to LAX.
I love Santa Barbara - mild weather, on the beach and a funky little downtown, with easy access to LA (although I suspect decent healthcare in SB environs, too). The vibe is more interesting to me than any place I’ve been in FL.

The big Air Force base isn’t too far, so there’s a community of retired Air Force families, too, which leads to lots of services for retired families within a 45 minute drive
Climate change makes the gulf pretty unappealing. The storms are only to get worse.

Was going to suggest this. My parents lived in La Jolla.
Were costs comparable to here? I’d love to retire there (in 30 years 😂)
Housing is very expensive and the taxes it away at a lot of your money, however groceries and daily living expenses are not bad.
