"Prestigious southern schools?" What is a prestigious southern school? Most "prestige" is in the NE/Ivies/specific other private and state schools....none of which are "southern." The South is not really known for its prestigious academic institutions. They may be very old and very well known, some may have strong football teams.

"Prestige" of these schools depends on where you're from/live. I would not say Oklahoma has any "prestige" here; whereas JMU is very popular here, though its "prestige" is still relative and debatable.
I think you mistake "nationally recognized name" with "prestige."

My son went to Virginia Tech. We live in Connecticut. As an out-of-state parent, I envy the great state colleges in Virginia. You are lucky to have so many great options at in-state tuition.

My son went to Virginia Tech because we thought the engineering program was better at Virginia Tech than at UConn. And my son liked the campus and the mountains. Also job placement seemed more regional at UConn. The difference between UConn instate tuition and Virginia Tech out of state tuition at the time (2015-2019) was manageable. My son had a good experience at Virginia Tech, got a great job and is now in North Carolina. He did not want to stay in Connecticut. UVA, William & Mary and Virginia Tech are all better than UConn, in my opinion. UConn suffers from uneven funding and leadership, especially in STEM. I don't know the other state schools in Virginia but there seem to be multiple other public options in Virginia.

Kids stayed in VA but chose W&M JDP, so did 2 years abroad.

13:25 again. Become familiar with each university's Common Data Set (or similarly named, online) Important information on graduation rates, Freshmen retention, level of Greek participation, enrolled student stats. So much more.

OP, just have them apply to all the Virginia schools you mentioned, and see where they get in. Done. Tour and compare later once admitted.

I'm not the pp you quoted, but my kid (currently a college freshman) applied to Oklahoma and did not apply JMU (though he ultimately chose a different school.)
Oklahoma has many programs that JMU would not--for example, meteorology. Oklahoma also has a larger engineering school than JMU.

It was for the insane DMV ideology where you cling to any prestige possible instead of just … using the perfectly fine state colleges of your own state. but sure, if your NOVA kid has always dreamed of the flatlands of Oaklahoma and aspires to be an oil and gas engineer, it’s a great option.

I know someone who is a professor at Oklahoma and she grumbles about how dumb the kids are there. Avoiding places like Oklahoma and Alabama is not just about the “prestige”…

We avoided these states due to backwards state laws. YMMV
