What about a quick cruise to Bermuda?

This is such a great tip. Thanks!

Do you have a Costco membership? They do bundled car/hotel rates that are very good deals in my experience. You can even add flights. Sometimes they offer payment installments too if that helps

I’ll have to check this out. It might be worth getting a membership if the savings is great. Thanks!

I would go Atlanta for the aquarium, or New Orleans. Start with wherever has the cheapest flights.

Although I found hotels and Airbnbs in Atl to be pricey last visit.

San Diego.
The zoo and museums in Balboa Park are great. Hike + tide pools on Coronado Island is free. Splurge for a whale watch.

Montreal is close and feels very European. It might be cold in March, but there’s a great ropes course downtown and plenty of museums.

Mystic Connecticut. The historic seaport and aquarium could be fun for a short trip and you could drive or take train from DC.

Florida Keys. Take the ferry out to Dry Tortugas National Park and go snorkeling.

Airfare is expensive now, so I think a cheaper flight is your best option so you can do more activities. Atlanta was a good suggestion because I think flights are relatively cheap, it's warm, you can do the aquarium, and there are lots of other attractions.

No. I am just calling the trip this. 13 is a a significant age.

Not significant in our family. Nice to have money like that. If I could do it, though, I would opt for the old-fashioned Grand Tour at 18. Children at that age will appreciate it more. But, alas, saving for college

$2k is NOT a lot of money, this will not be an extravagant trip.

Op here. 2k is a lot of money for us honestly. That is why I am being very try judicious in planning. If I could afford to send him on an international trip I would.

Hmmm. He’s fed sharks at an aquarium. Not sure which kind.

Kid sounds pretty indulged.

Lol. Not at all.

Shut up. It’s a very common attraction at aquariums and museums including in Chicago where OP said they’ve been.

We are doing space coast with our kid, plane tickets, car and hotel were relatively inexpensive, you could potentially add a day or two in Disney or universal and stay on budget

If DC would be perfect, then the answer is Bostom. Visit the museum of science. Walk the freedom trail, maybe with a downloaded audio guide. In the North end, eat here: https://thedailycatch.com/ and stop at either Mike’s or Modern for a Connolly or other dessert. Either go to the Aquarium or one of the MIT or Harvard Museums.
