To go deeper, make posts on Pitt's Reddit, watch YouTube of students, ask people who have kids at Pitt right now. If you make a campus visit, ask in advance if you can arrange a meeting with an engineering undergrad.

If PSATs are 97th percentile or above, check on what is going on with the Honors College. It is best suited for people that have their own special areas of academic interest they want to research/study more about in college. Admission webinars start in the late summer. Your child can certainly attend as a junior.

Both schools are a great mix of urban and big school/big sports experience.

OP here- I think EA from UMN is rolling in gradually. Your DS will likely hear soon and if he was accepted to Pitt, there's a likely chance he was accepted to Minnesota. He should check.

PP Again (much later). DC finally heard from Minnesota today. Deferred. We are a little surprised because he was accepted by Ohio State, Penn State, and NC State. He was deferred at Purdue and Michigan though. All good since he is happy with the options that he has in hand. Really waiting on his first choice, VT (in-state), though - so the deferrals are giving him some anxiety.

U of M undergrad alum and Harvard grad school. Moved family back to Twin Cities from DMV when kids were in early elementary and am so happy we did. I love the U's campus and architecture, with the Minneapolis skyline in the background. One of my closest friends from a year abroad in Amsterdam went to Pitt and he loved it. I think both are great options and in nice, down to earth cities.

The merit is solid there, and UMN actually seems to want DMV kids. Apply early!

Same exact dates for us. I have read on College Confidential that notification varies widely- maybe by program. Consensus is that they notify on Mondays at 5:20pm for any updates to the portal so just check have kid on Mondays. I think if you "beat the rush" like we did, you get an early response but they are probably in the thick of reviews now. We are still waiting for honor and merit which some have received. They said on the virtual admitted students visit that honors and merit decisions can roll out through March.

I’m PP with the 10/7 acceptance.

We just got merit from MN, two awards including one for a student waiver for instate tuition rates. Total is $17k in merit per year.
