Yes, please name these mythical schools that require the FAFSA for merit.

Fordham told me filling out the FAFSA is required to receive the full tuition NMSF scholarship they offer, even though it's merit-based.

When you are HNW/UHNW, you might think differently. Don't need a university or the government having all of our financial information stored in a single place. One that could (and likely someday will be) compromised. And it's none of the universities business about our finances.

Yes on the FAFSA only for my kid who applied to Midwest LACs RD. A couple wanted it for merit aid (ie to figure out where out “pain point” was/ how much to discount. FWIW, multiple colleges came within about $7500 a year all in once merit was added. So, they were almost certainly using it. CSS was not required unless applying for need, so we got to skip that.

No for the kid who applied to WM ED. We had 8 semesters of prepaid tuition in her VA 529. She wasn’t getting a dime and we weren’t asking. And WM merit didn’t need it )not that there is much merit). If she hadn’t gotten in ED, some of the same colleges were on her list, so we would have had to.

Just keep an eye out. Some school want to see a FAFSA for merit aid. (And many don’t).

Varies by school. For most merit FAFSA or CSS are generally not required.

We did not fill it out for either child, and the first got merit everywhere and second has a full merit scholarship to a rolling safety already this year.

However, I have heard that a few schools require it for merit aid (which makes no sense), but we did not encounter any of those in the process. I suspect those schools want that data from you for development, so we likely would not have given them our financial data and passed on merit (or would have suggested not applying at all).
