I have a sister who met her husband in college. She went from my father’s house to living with her fiance/husband. She never lived in a city. She had kids young.

I was single all through my 20s in a large city.

We look very much alike and have had very different experiences.

Men target women who are not with an man and/or not with kids. Once you have kids with you it’s like an invisibility cloak.

We need to prepare our daughters either way.

I was the first person on this thread to mention being assaulted in the past. I am a plain dresser and not attractive. I chalk those assaults up to bad luck, being the woman who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and being in a lot of social situations in my 20s. There were times I was the ugliest person in a big group and the only one targeted. I can only think it’s because I wasn’t coupled off and wasn’t a “star” of the group or party so the attacker thought he could get away with it.

Only one was a stranger and that was the one when I pressed charges, and he attacked multiple women that night. Bad, bad luck.

My 1st boss stood up to my harassment on day 1 and was very intense about it.

I grew up in the 80's and I was like oh well that's how it is.

He was like no, it won't change if you don't call it out.

So I've called it out my whole life. I'm not afraid of confrontation and I'd say nobody that knows me is going to harassed me at this point.

At a recent xmas party another vendor was at our venue and a young man made a rude comment about me sleeping with his boss (the only reason I guess he thought the owner would talk to me, not because I'm and exec) and my staff held their breath like "OMG here we go"... luckily the owner of the company was like "don't you dare talk like that" and made him apologize.

So seriously, they need to call it out.

Same here. I think it makes 5 of us on this thread so far. I was beautiful in my teens/20s/30s and always dated very attractive, successful men (and then married one --a physician). But I was never really harassed--not even really cat called.

I don't really exude sexuality or vulnerability. I've never dressed provocatively or even very femininely. I'm not saying that women should change their dress to avoid harassment but I've always wondered why I never got harassed why other women say they were continually and I assume it must have had something to do with my clothing. I otherwise don't know.

One theory I have is some of it is whether you stand out in some way. Are you average height, average hair color, average build etc? Dress just fitting in? I have a friend like this and we would talk about it and no one really bothered her. She just blended in.

I am tall and blond and got harassed a bunch. I think I both stuck out and was memorable for people who might see me repeatedly during regular day to day life.

Also have you lived in a city. I challenge a decently attractive and young woman to walk 20 blocks in a real city daily for a month and not have someone call out to them or something happen.

+1 The only time I had men catcalling me was when I had a 30-40 minute commute by bus and walking downtown in a major city. The weird thing was that it was never men the same race as me. It was always older men of one race or younger men from another. It really broke down along predictable patterns.

Important point: talk to all your kids, not just your daughters. Your boys may not be the type, but tolerating any sort of nonsense from friends towards people in a weaker position is being complicit. Teach your kids to call out harassment and be strong to social pressures. Everyone has a job to do, not just the girls.

Also, transgender kids are often targets. Teach your kids to love themselves and stand up to being picked on. They need to hear it from you. 🙂
