To be quite frank, no one is going to look at a schools like Wisconsin and Utah and think there is that much of a difference. They are both state schools. They are both very large. They are not very selective at all. When you admit almost half of those who apply that's just the reality. Same thing with yield. When your yield is under 30% that tells you that the school is considered a backup.

I don't know why this dose of reality makes some people mad. You can get a great outcome from either school. Go on to law school, nursing school, become a teacher, work as an engineer.

C'mon. It's Wisconsin. Not many care. Kids I see getting in are solid students but 2 tiers down from the top at our private hs. Fun place. Good solid school. From having lived in Chicago, plenty of successful grads & good people. No shame attending. No shame attending any school. But no matter the amt of crying & butthurt, it's not Cal, Ucla, Michigan, UVA, UNC level from a national perspective. It's the school I see decent students from surburban Chicago choose when they don't get NU nor Michigan. & they don't want Illinois.

I know ALOT of kids who went to Utah OOS and none transferred out freshman year. It is no longer AS state heavy as it used to be, but still very instate heavy (73% - comparative to UMass but less OOS students than Wisconsin)

It is much easier to gain acceptance to Utah than Wisconsin - but, conversely, Utah gives good merit money to OOS and their honors college perks are not bad. It's also a Tier 1 Research institution with a good med school, business school and a decent law school. It's a beautiful place to spend four years if you are outsdoorsy (climbing or skiing). SLC is like Austin - an island of liberalism in the midst of serious conservatism - and it is VERY crunchy due to the influx of the outdoorsy types (lots of vegan restaurants, live music, bars, thriving LGBTQ scene). You can be climbing in 30 minutes - and easy to go to top climbing spots in the country. Yes, a car is preferable for climbing - but there is always someone going and organized trips through the climbing club. Same for skiing. UVM is not a Tier 1 Research institution. This may be important to your child because Tier 1 gets more grant money etc, so offers more opportunities for internships etc. BUT, UVM is MUCH smaller than Utah, so not as much competition for the opportunities that are available. and Colby is MUCH smaller than both - and not a university.

Aside from the fact that you are incorrect, you are missing the point of my post. If OP is planning to apply to law school later, undergrad prestige is unimportant in law school admission. For the individual undergrad student applying to top law schools, there will be zero difference in top law school admission outcomes between applying as an undergrad from U Wisconsin or applying as an undergrad from U Utah.

They’re always at Bronx high school of science college fair advertising Also at Sidwell friends college fair. Only a handful of kids choose Wisconsin from these schools. I suppose, given their location, that is an incredible fact in itself. Still, dozens choose Michigan and USC, despite the small academic difference between all three of these schools.

Bronx High School is a top feeder to U of M. Why would it be unusual to have a rep at their college fair? That's a job that reps do.
