NP. Any recommendations for hotels or neighborhoods you’d recommend for an Airbnb? Looking for a safe area that’s walkable to restaurants/nightlife - doesn’t have to be walking distance to main attractions.

I was in CDMX in Nov. 2024. Loved it.
I think Ballet Folklorico and Museum of Arte Popular are well worth doing.
I felt safe.
Contramar IS as good as its hype.

We loved Mexico City with our ten year old. We also visited Tulum which I did not enjoy but we loved Cozumel. So I’d recommend something like 4 days in Mexico City and four days in Cozumel.

We just came back from there over the winter break. 6 adults and one kid. It was lovely! As a pp stated, highlights included:
- anthropology museum - the kid even liked it!
- pyramid (although agree with others to get a private tour otherwise there are too many in the group and carry snacks and water)
- food! All good!!!
- Frida Lalo museum
- boat ride with mariachi
- market (Holiday markets we're still open)
- Diego Rivera murals at the university

We stayed in Condesa as well. And what a lovely part of the city. So lush and green and walkable. Tons of parks and playgrounds abound.

We did a Culinary Backstreets day tour, and did a group outing for the hot air balloon ride over the pyramids that included tranportation. Other than those two things, we planned everything on our own.

If you’re just doing CDMX, I’m not sure why you’d need to join a tour. We did hire a driver to go out to the pyramids but that was it and easily arranged ourselves.

CDMX is awesome - go! Just went this past fall. A few recommendations:

Go to Lucha Libre at Arena Mexico, yell and cheer your heart out, get the popcorn (so yummy, better than ours).

Anthropology Museum

Frieda Kahlo’s house and the neighborhood/market nearby.

Yes. Thanksgiving is a just a regular day there, though there are a few restaurants that serve a Thanksgiving meal for gringos (like at international hotels or Pinche Gringo BBQ).

Christmas is relatively quiet. Mexicans celebrate Christmas more on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve is often seen as more of a family holiday than a time to party.

Many middle class+ Mexicans from Mexico City may take that time to go to a beach for the week, or rent a house in some place like Cuernavaca. Mexico City is full of "foráneos" -- Mexicans from other states -- so those people go home over Christmas, too.

Anonymous wrote:Why go there? Mexico's primary attraction is that it is inexpensive. It does have some cultural attractions, but also has significant crime problems in many areas and dysfunctional/corrupt law enforcement. In other words, it's definitely a mixed bag, although you'll here from a lot of cheerleaders here.

If you can afford somewhere else, I'd go somewhere else.

Some foreigners say this about the U.S.

We went last year for 10 days and could have stayed longer.

The posts saying how dangerous it is are ridiculous. We walked around town, took buses and trams, rented a car, etc. and had absolutely no fears or concerns at any time.

You should go. It's wonderful city, great food, great green spaces, great shopping, great museums, you get the idea.

Go to the government run craft stores, excellent selection and very decent prices.

And agree, stay in Condesa.

Tell me you haven't been to Mexico City without telling me you've haven't been to Mexico City.
