A close friend of my son's started this year. Brilliant kid, and something of a grinder. In engineering. He's apparently very happy. But not a kid who was looking for the typical college experience like Michigan etc.

In terms of most similar, I would say Cornell, Columbia, Chicago based on academic focus.

decent school with improving social life. students are smart (top 3 in test scores and class rank).

High yield low acceptance as well. I suspect most did not have it as an option with a 6% acceptance rate hence the stray backhanded remarks.

Do those kids consider Georgetown much? I would think most of this is that JHU is too close and Baltimore doesn’t feel like much of a new college experience vs some verdict on the school.

Baltimore is far enough from DC than Georgetown. I don't think it's the proximity that's an issue. Hopkins just has an un-fun, only pre-med vibe that students don't like.

This is a completely useless response. Op is interested in hearing from those who actually attend the school, not some parent’s impression of what kids think of the school.

My kids bestie is there and loves it. In IR. Bloomberg has really made a difference there.

I think sciences may be more of a grind

Which schools are most comparable in terms of culture and types of kids who would be good fit?

I have 2 kids there. They have found a great group of students there. Joined clubs, attend parties and enjoy the surrounding neighborhoods. The students seem to be kind and well rounded.
