Check out a store called Chaliskan at Tysons Galleria. They have a website but it really doesn’t show a lot of their stuff. I was in there once and they had some long cutout leather overlay jackets that were nice. Yes, some are tacky, but some were pretty and would look great with a one color matching slack and tops which they had.

Event is on the other side of country, so travel is involved. I arrive late the night before, so if wrinkly fabric I would need to steam.

One splurge item I do own — found it at a consignment store in Boston and went for it — is this ankle length farm rio rainbow striped sweater: https://posh.mk/4hDuIKkUxOb could potentially wear this over something sleek and dark? Would I feel kooky/frumpy or casually stylish? (Note there is no black on the sweater — only navy).

Woke up a little more comfortable spending a bit of money though would love to keep in the three-digit range including shoes/bag/etc.

I think it can be whatever length and shoe honestly, it will definitely look like a muumuu. I think it’s elegant but it will not make you look smaller or slim or anything like that. It’s just fun and easy.

I don’t know where you live, but if you can get there, I recommend checking out Goodwood on U St in NW DC. They have really nice beautiful clothing, in a unique, flowy, artsy vibe. The staff are also helpful.

Way late here, but relate a lot to OP and my solution has been very cool Kimonos over very simple black dresses or some other simple base layer. I have a few that without fail get tons of compliments, don’t look like something Mrs Roper would wear (iykyk) and hide a multitude of sins. Helps if you have a great pair or shoes or boots too.
