Anyone with an ounce of intelligence would have put one more kid in the minivan to meet the HOV3 requirement and travel for free.

That only works if you have the right kind of ezpass transponder that you can switch to carpool mode. If you don’t have that, you pay even if your car had 3+ people in it. If you don’t regularly use those lanes for carpooling, you aren’t likely to have the transponder, because it has a fee if you’re not regularly using it for HOV travel.

The level of entitlement is what gets me— it’s not oh we screwed up and how we are we going to pay for this, it’s how dare they charge me this after I decided to save time by driving my oversized vehicle on a toll road without making any effort to find out the tolls.

I do agree that signs listing tolls for I-66 need to list the whole toll to the other end as one of the exits listed. That is what many many other toll roads do.

Listing whichever intermediate exit tolls is fine, but there should be one listing it the whole way to the other end.

Their website gives an estimated toll with the caveat "Toll estimations are based on standard vehicle pricing, and historical averages. Actual tolls charged may vary depending on traffic congestion and the classification of the vehicle.". So, no, the website doesn't really help. Some of you are missing the point. This isn't just about this particular individual's bill (and in fact he accepts that the toll he was charged is probably correct), it's about the fact that anyone could be caught by surprise on this toll road.

The tolls are displayed on the signs. Hard to not know.

Only per segment. And it’s difficult to get out of the toll lanes and onto the regular 66.
