And you think things are going great now, where were behind almost every other first world nation in education? Getting rid of the useless Dept. of Education (which has only been around since 1980) would be worth a try.
How does patriotism and prayer in school help with academics? you know what doesn't help? Insisting kids learn about the Bible. Save that for Sunday school.

Disagree. Prayer and religion in schools definitely helps many young people with anxiety and behavioral issues. Furthermore, those areas are Christian areas. If those Christian parents want Bibles in the schools, no harm done. What’s it to you? Public schools everywhere often try to respond to and embrace the cultures of the students they serve.
In fact, maybe this is more of an argument against a federal department of education. State departments of education could better respond to the needs and demographics of each individual state.
Surely you understand that even in the bible belt, not every student attending is religious, right? No, this should not be left up to the states. Religion has no place in public schools, period.

My brother teaches HS in Oklahoma and I can't tell you the sad stories of kids who are graduating and don't even know basic math. Many can barely read those Bibles.
What does it tell you then, that with all the money spent per student, DMV kids are not as smart or high achieving than in other pockets of the country? It can't be all that time at school invested in woke social agendas and "everybody gets an A" level of classes, right? It's definitely the bibles.

Because too many people vote for a candidate and have not clue what they are voting for. Very true in this election. And if you don't know what the department of education is get off of DCum and go figure it out.

Can't speak to Oklahoma, but Mississippi has a fair claim to be the best run state in the USA, as far as public education is concerned. The "Mississippi miracle" has seen their test scores shoot up from worst in the country to somewhere in the middle, with little change to either demographics or economics. They've done yeoman's work fixing up e.g. basic literacy programs, including restructuring the teacher pipeline to properly support them. It's well worth reading about, if you get the chance.
It’s about time Mississippi felt some shame about being the worst in just about everything and are doing something about it. They wasted a lot of years on Jim Crow and trying to keep Black people second class. Now they need to clean up their mess and start to pay their own way.

Where exactly are these bastions of excellent public education? It's not in the DMV. And your one rich neighborhood is an outlier.
New England has the best public schools. Maybe it’s because they are also the least religious people in the country. The focus is education not bibles. And even the very top public schools do a poor job with American history and the damage done by our country over the last 100 years. They ignore it.

And absolutely your child has been exposed to many materials about gender fluidity, normalizing transition, etc. in the DMV
This has led to disaster IMO, now we have very little consequences for anything or anyone. Kids can hit, threaten, run away and they don't even get sent home for the remainder of the day. We had a kid bring a knife to school and threaten another kid and all he got was one day in-school suspension. People don't feel safe, starting in elementary school and it's a big driver behind teachers leaving.

According to their website, not a whole lot, which is not surprising since public education is a state obligation (according to Federal court rulings).
The US situation is different from more centralized countries (e.g., France) where a national curriculum is chosen by central government - rather than by local school boards as is usual in the US.
For example, the "Common Core" is a voluntary consortium created jointly by several states, not something handed down from the Federal DoEd.

I have been shocked, after watching Mississippi educational success rank either 49 or 50 out of 50 states for my whole life, until very recently. Mississippi actually led the way in restoring sane reading curriculum - the whole “Science of Reading” movement gathered steam when Mississippi adopted it and saw dramatic statewide improvement in reading attainment.
I haven't looked into the specifics but usually this type of thing is a sham where they just kick out kids who aen't performing in order to improve their standing.
Not a sham in this case.
They fixed the literacy curriculum state-wide and re-trained the reading teachers. It took a few years for the outcome to be clear, as one would expect.
