Just like, ALL of my kid's friends at the college they attended (didn't get into ED1, got into 2nd choice), got "spring start or sophomore guaranteed transfer" at "higher ranked schools". None of them (15+ kids) took it. They all are very happy where they ended up and cannot imagine switching as a transfer

Obviously it would depend upon the school. But seriously, for a school with sub 10% acceptance rates, you explain to me how going from ED to EA/RD does not signal "not as interested in you" at least 95% of the time? Unless it's financially related I don't think it would benefit most applicants to do that.
Sure you may be an outlier, but colleges want kids who will attend. Your switch signals you may not attend.

DD was deferred from her ED school and decided not to apply ED2. (I thought this was a mistake b/c ED2 school seemed like a better fit and she was a legacy.) She got into the ED1, potential ED2, and several other peer schools RD. She didn't enroll at the ED1 school because by the spring she felt like one of the RD schools was a better fit (as did I). She's never regretted her decision.
