This. He was an okay artist ( he and the Beatles are hugely overrated in my opinion). I still like some of the music, but John Lennon the man was trash a lot of what he did has been overlooked because of the time he lived, because of his tragic death, and his stans and stans of the Beatles.

He would be considered a pedophile today. A lot of rock stars slept with underage groupies, and no, that doesn't make it ok

You don't know what you're talking about. John slept around but not with underage groupies. In fact, one of his main affairs was with a woman eight years older than him, Alma Cogan. (Yoko was seven years older than him, BTW.) He had many faults, but he was no Jimmy Page.

They slept around a lot and did a lot of drugs. If you haven't heard of it, you probably haven't read the right books about the group. While some books are more reliable than others, there's enough coming from corroborated sources, and often from their own mouths, that it's accepted as established fact.

John Lennon said in a 1975 interview with Tom Snyder, and quoted in the Beatles Anthology book:

"In the very early days, when we were playing dance halls, there were a certain type you'd call groupies now, available for 'functions' at the end of the night. Most kids would go home with their boyfriends or whatever, but there was a small group that went for any performer."

The Beatles' entourage (particularly roadies Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall) acted as interference whenever anybody tried to catch the Beatles in the act, whether that be drugs, or underage girls, or just paparazzi trying to snap a scandalous photo.

There was only one time that any of them were actually caught in the act, and it was Paul. Paul was caught in his bedroom with a couple of underage girls on their tour stop in Minneapolis in 1965, and there's a rather infamous (in Beatles circles) surviving news report about it, where the police officer who caught Paul was interviewed. There were some news articles written about it at the time, but Paul was unmarried, and the scandal died down relatively quickly.

Give it a rest. You are copying someone else's comment from Reddit. And I've read all the books.

I really like the Beatles' music but I have come to really dislike John and Paul as people. John was an overall terrible human being---the way he treated his first wife and son, and even his relationship with Yoko (whom I also dislike). He did seem to be a decent father to Sean but that hardly makes up for it. He just seems like an exceptionally difficult person to be around. He can lie in bed and lecture about ending war all he wants while he gets high, but he treated people like shit.

Paul is a musical genius (I like his music better than JOhn's overall) but he was just too much. Too controlling, too dismissive of his bandmates. However, his personal life seems much more normal which humanizes him a bit.

George and Ringo for the win, despite their own flaws.

It’s hard to feel any sympathy for Yoko. She flaunted her affair with John and then made sure to cut his first son out of any inheritance. She was a first class jerk.

I guarantee you every band that you like worships The Beatles.

Not only that, but the Beatles have influenced virtually every band that came after them.

They essentially invented the rock band, the stadium tour, the merchandising contract …

The Beatles defined the contours of the music industry as we know it.

People don’t have to love them, but to call them overrated is just ignorant.

Sure, The Beatles have an unquestionable place in music history. They influenced the sound of popular music. I don't think anyone is rejecting that.

They didn't invent music bands, though they were one of the first big ones in the new genre called rock.

Elvis Presley went on the first stadium tour.

Elvis Presley had a merchandising contract before The Beatles did.

They were the first rock band. Elvis did not form a rock band.

Before the Beatles, bands were primarily one person backed by others. Elvis fit that mold. So did Buddy Holly.

The Beatles were the first musical group where all members contributed to the songwriting and all members were known as equal members of the group.

Elvis also did not go on a stadium tour. The first stadium show was 1965 shea stadium.

The Beatles had the first modern merchandising deal.

Ok, let me specify:

Elvis did play stadiums. But he did not do an extensive stadium TOUR.

He played a 5 date stint.

The Beatles did 3 separate, long stadium tours. They started stadium rock.

5-day tour = stadium tour
Let's not now qualify.

Not only is there room for other musical artists in your pantheon of musical greatness, but there are artists who made strides earlier than The Beatles.

Please make a list for us of the songs Elvis wrote. Go ahead, we'll all wait. Elvis and his father were so ignorant they literally refused to shelter their income because they believed the more taxes you paid, the more wealthy you were.

They attempted to buy a huge plot of land in Mississippi and made the seller aware of who the buyer was. Guess how much the seller jacked up the price once he found out which financial geniuses wanted to buy it.

Easy there. What was I doing except refuting the claims that The Beatles invented rock groups, stadium tours and merchandising contracts?

I’m a huge fan of the Beatles and agree that Paul wrote more melodically, but some of John’s songs really stick in my head. I love “Dig a Pony” and “Happiness is a Warm Gun,” for example. Some of George’s songs are great, too.

Julian Lennon said that before and after his parents divorced Paul was more nurturing and caring to him than John was. He said he is tired of the saintly peace-loving image of John, who was physically abusive to Cynthia.

If I never hear the song “Imagine” again it will be too soon.

Agreed. I always heard that it was Yoko who tried convince everyone that John was most responsible for the great songs. Recent documentary footage shows that it was Paul.

Yoko Ono had nothing to do with that. There have always been opinions on this topic.
