In my observation that is an overstatement and our HS has a mediocre varsity boys basketball program (3 winning seasons over the past decade). If a freshman team is strong maybe half will progress to varsity. If it’s weak it’s more like 15-25%. Keep in mind the size of the freshman rosters also tend to be big.

Our girls varsity program has been stronger (multiple district titles) but the overall talent pool is thin. In many cases no girls on the freshmen team ever make varsity, even if the freshman team is .500 or higher. It’s also much easier for talented freshmen girls to make JV or varsity.

It is performative at our large public high school. Coach even has told kids before tryouts that they would have a hard time making the team. Those that made the team are those who play together off season, go to Green Days etc. are the ones who make the team.

That doesn’t make it unfair to me. If two players show up, both the same or one slightly better than the other at tryouts but the coach has seen the other play and be consistent, they’re going to pick that person. That is life.

If freshman don’t move on, it’s not *because* they were on the freshman team. So in the context in which the question was asked, it’s actually ludicrous.

At the large HS very few freshman make JV. Most of the rising freshman team has a shot at JV the next year.

If its a large fcps hs, only 1-2 freshman will be put on JV/Varsity. And socially, the freshman team is better for a lot of reasons.

Most high school sports teams don't have social media.

Your son missed the announcement, for whatever reason. Its fine. If he is a good player, he will make their freshman team. Its not super difficult to make the CHS freshman team despite the size of the school.

We did not know about any green days or fall league. I actively looked at the Chantilly Chargers site and nothing was mentioned. Is the fall league/green day word of mouth?

Did you check their social media? It's hard to get to tryouts as an unknown entity.
