I have read these but saw a profile in my college alumni magazine — Jaden Toussant the Greatest (it’s a series, I think for ES readers).

Some great ones here that my son in particularly really loved, like the Tristan strong series.
I’d also recommend the dan gutman series about a kid who time travels through baseball cards. I don’t know the kid’s race but many of the baseball stats he visits are Blak or POC— Jackie and Me; Satch and Me; Roberto and Me; Willie and Me.
There’s also the American Girl doll novels about Melody (1960s), Cecile (New Orleans early 19th century); and Addy.

I always enjoyed reading "The Snowy Day" by Keats to my kids. It captures a young kid's fascination with snow. I think young kids, maybe 6yo or 7yo would read it on their own.
