I don't know why those in an evacuation area don't drive 7 miles inland to a school shelter or drive 2 hours over to Orlando. In Orlando you can at least sit in an air conditioned hotel lobby if no rooms are available.

But we do see the people stranded on their roof to escape the flood waters, awaiting rescue.

Generally you only have to drive around 10 or 20 miles inland for shelter at a safe facility.

For those staying they need to have a ladder ready and an axe in case they need to cut through the roof to get on the roof in case of flooding.

They also need to be prepared to stay in the bathtubs during the high winds for safety.

In the coastal areas residents can expect power out for weeks from lines down and possibly water shut off.

Also, if you have family members not evacuating expect cell service to be down due to cell service down and high volume of calls. Cell service can be down for days.

If your family member still has a landline these generally will work during the storms. Get landline numbers of your family member or their neighbors.

When you're on the roof with rising waters, the Coast Guard will put themselves at risk to save you. Unless your neighbors own mitary grade helicopters this idea that you will be able to bail yourselves out is nuts.

I grew up in Florida, I lived through the "scares". The government would much rather you evacuate for no reason than underestimate and you die. They err on the side of caution and you should too.
