I get pedicures, but not particularly regularly. I don’t get manicures because I am ambidextrous and can do it well myself if I want to. However, I said I wouldn’t get a manicure until the baby was out of diapers.

The baby is now 20, but I still haven’t gone back to mancicures!

I do! But when I leave the house, it's always in closed toe shoes, so no one sees my toes.

You really can’t look around you and see how many people have their nails manicured?

I live in a very ethnic area where the long, pointy acrylics are common, and that's not what I'm talking about, so it's hard to tell.

There’s a contingent of sour dcums that are super anti manicure. I think they’re also the same people on this board who also recommend the fugliest shoes whenever people do a shoe thread.

I DIY. If you use a polish with gardeners (China Glaze is good) or a quick dry top coat (Seche Vite) it’s easy to change polish every week. I enjoy watching tv and doing them at home. I don’t love the salon money, time, or labor practices.

I'd like to get them done more often, but I'm not very feminine or in tune to beauty standards, and I worry it's...trashy? Sorry to use an overused word on DCUM, but I don't know how else to put it. Could use advice.

Probably won't look good on you, but not because of the nails.

You think the wedding was trashy?

It's strange that hairdresser is a normal, ok-paying career for an american-born person but manicurist is not.

You can find manicurists who aren't foreign and victimized - you're just going to pay more. I like to go to full-service salons to get my nails done for this reason. They usually have one person who does nails, and the facilities are much cleaner and more pleasant.

I’m a former nail biter/skin excoriator (also WASP, fair-skinned, 55, in a health services profession) and keeping my nails neat and clean is very important to me. I go every two weeks for mani/pedi and change my colors up all the time. I started with acrylic overlays because my nails were an absolute mess and bitten - but even the overlays or fake nails are short and natural looking.

Mostly I do pale pinks or white and sometimes do a red or hot pink. I have my nail tech do a rounded square for a natural look.

Just do it yourself, it’s not that hard, it’s a lot cheaper, and can actually be quite fun. There are even a lot of at home gel kits now.

I far prefer the dip. I tend to pick at my cuticles if I don't have my nails done, which looks terrible and can be painful. The dip looks professional and lasts a long time. I keep them short and get neutral colors with an almond shape. I think they look polished and they make me happy. Going every 2-3 weeks is kind of a pain in the butt but it forces me to do something for myself so that is nice I guess.

Do you do them yourself at home?

I do the dip manicures as well. I have mine kept short and choose light, neutral colors. Mine last 3-4 weeks without chipping and show no obvious grow out with the light tones. It looks nice and keeps me from picking at my cuticles as well.

Sounds fine. Long nails, or french manicures are trashy.
