Nope. I’m a teacher and don’t have money for new clothes. Here’s what I bought this school year- winter snow boots, real rain boots, real rain jacket, another fleece jacket (fleece is my weakness), a dress for a graduation from Pact, new Nike sneakers, a few t shirts for school, two pairs of shorts. That’s a lot for me.

I still have clothes from college I often wear. That was decades ago.

Nice thing about modern times, there's no one look anymore like there was in the 50s, early 60s, late 60s/early70s or disco era or late 1980s big hair shoulder pad era, or mid 90s mom jeans era.

It all started to blend starting the early 2000s and now you see a mix of many of the above, even on the same person. Well except the disco sequined stuff or the shoulder pads linebacker blouses.

Yes, thanks to my husband. He doesn’t mind that I spoil myself and likes the looks I pick.

Clothing gets overwhelming to me. If I do see a piece I like, I put it on hold and think about it. I find that as I get older, I'm buying less and investing more in hair care/skin care.

I feel this so deeply I'm also in my late 30s with a wardrobe that’s mostly complete, especially after investing in those timeless, quality pieces in my 20s and early 30s. I don’t really need anything new, but the change of seasons still gets to me. There’s something about that fresh start feeling in spring or fall that makes me want to add just one or two new things, even if it’s not out of necessity.

I’ve found that I shop way less now, but when I do, it’s more intentional. I’ll get something if it fills a gap, works with what I already have, or just brings a little joy into the daily grind. And honestly, sometimes that joy is enough of a reason. That said, I’ve started checking out (https://gmadealsandstealstoday6.wordpress.com/) when I get the urge it’s helped me find a few unexpected gems without feeling like I’ve overspent or bought into trends I’ll regret. It kind of scratches the itch to shop but keeps things practical and budget friendly.

Since it hasn't been mentioned, I use an app to track my purchases and wears. After a year of data I was able to really quickly see what items are "worth" spending money on because the cost per wear is so low - things like good shoes, jeans, well-made classic sweaters, basic accessories all have low CPW despite being some of the initially most expensive items I've purchased.

At the same time, some items just don't need to have money spent on them - like dresses to wear for a specific event/activity. I have a few fun holiday-only items though they get 1-2 wears A YEAR ... a good reminder not to fall victim to pretty advertising and to try to get the best deal if I really really really need/want that.

It’s called StyleBook

I usually buy a few pieces in the spring and fall, but I have dropped 2 sizes since last winter, so I am in replacement mode. Consignment and poshmark are my besties right now.

Anonymous wrote:I buy clothes every year as things I have get worn out or don't fit anymore. Certain things like t-shirts and workout clothes have to be replaced more often. I also buy a new pair of sneaker about every other year.

Occasionally I'll buy a few things I don't strictly "need" in order to kind of update or refresh my wardrobe if it's starting to look really dated or I just can't find anything I like in it. And when I get new things I'll retire others so that my wardrobe isn't constantly expanding. But generally I don't replace things like this more frequently than every 5 years and often it's more like 10-15 years.

So it's not like I'm getting a new wardrobe every year. I also tend to stay away from trendy items no matter what.

When do you decide to throw out the tshirts?

I’m in my mid-30s and still working on building my wardrobe. As a mom, I’m always trying to find that balance between practical and fun, but I get a lot of joy from clothes. I don’t go crazy buying luxury stuff, but when I do want something a little fancier, I’ve found some amazing deals on Farfetch. They have sales pretty often and some hidden gems if you’re willing to dig a bit.

That said, most of my luxury shopping is pre-owned from places like Vinted or ebay. I’ve found a ton of great pieces (Madewell especially!) for a fraction of the price. Plus, I love the idea of reusing clothes instead of always buying new.

And yes, cashback apps are a game changer! I try to use them whenever I can, especially when we talk about kids clothes - in this case I'm more about finding a better deal rather than buying high quality clothes that lasts. I mostly use Ibotta and Monetha, depending on which if them has a better deal rn at where I shop. It adds up surprisingly fast and makes me feel better about treating myself every now and then

I usually buy at least one piece a month for myself. As long as it doesn’t blow the budget, I say go for it!

Anonymous wrote:You described me perfectly. When I worked full time in the office I would buy 4-5 nice new things each season. Usually 2 dresses and maybe 2 tops and one pair of pants. But now that I work from home I rarely buy anything. I really love wearing dresses and the feeling of a new dress so I buy maybe 2-3 a year but otherwise it's hard to justify. And even when I buy the new dresses I feel guilty because I don't really have a place to wear them to. I just hope work sends me on a business trip! I mostly buy classic but edgy dresses that don't go out of style.

I love dresses, too, and also work from home. when I wear them I feel overdressed, so then I don't wear them and feel sad.

What's an example of classic but edgy?
