Most people want a popular name. Who would give their kid an unpopular name. That doesn’t make sense.

I have a name that can be said differently depending on which syllable you put the emphasis on. I don’t have any issue correcting someone, but they normally say it both ways and check - like “potato? Potahto?’ And I’ll answer ‘potahto’ or whatever. But if someone continually called me the wrong name even after being corrected I’d be very annoyed, it’s incredibly disrespectful.

OT but I find it so creepy when people name and announce unborn kids.

I don't think it's a big deal but you do, OP. You do sound like a first time mother and the caring along with hormones is natural. But you are going to drive yourself craZy.

For what it’s worth, my Palestinian mom pronounces my BIL’s best friend Wes’ name as “Whizz.”

I think you just may not be picking up on the slight Z sound. How do you pronounce president? Do you really say it like the media “press”? I think most people say Prez.

Another person who pronounces the s as a z in Wesley, Leslie, Presley, president, resident, etc. but I am from the West Coast. Either call him "Wes", as others have suggested, or stop letting it bother you.

No, they’re pronouncing the S like a “z”. Like some people do with Leslie, they actually say Lezlie.

I have a name that is shortened constantly (even though I go by my full name, and always introduce myself as such). Despite knowing about this sort of annoyance, we similarly named our DS something that is easily shortened (Alexander), and call him by his full name. Sooooo many people shorten it to Alex. Used to really drive me crazy, but now I just let it go. And he doesn’t care, so that is really all that matters. Pick a name you love and don’t worry about what other people do!
