I can see if you're living bare bones - or you've reached a stage of life where you have everything you could possibly want to put on for any occasion. But otherwise? Clothes and shoes are *expensive*!
Some of us shop smartly. I just got a dress for a wedding that was $20 final sale. I wore some sparkly shoes I bought a couple years ago that were also on sale. I borrowed an evening bag from a friend. I am not the bride, so I don't need to spend a ton of money. My hair looked great, my outfit was good, and I had fun. No need to spend $600 on one night.

Lucky for me I work for an outdoors-y agency with no dress code, minimal time in the office and little interaction with the public. It would probably last until I retire in 10 years.

Normally I'd say years, maybe a few years as I haven't bought much since pre-covid and everything needs replaced.

It’s fine with me but it’s pretty funny to me that you are claiming $5k a year does not make you a big spender.
I mean I don't spend a lot on individual pieces. I don't buy designer purses or anything like that.

I would hope a “timeless” coat costing $5k+ lasts more than 5 years
I would allocate the 10k like this
- coat - 5k
- bag - 3.5k
- shoes 1 - 750
- shoes 2 - 750
2 pairs of shoes because you can't wear the same pair of shoes every day

I make $320K per year and I spend the following on these items:
Coat: $400 once every 5 years
Bag: $250 once every 3-4 years
Shoes 1: $200
Shoes 2: $200

When I was working in the office I was spending about $2500 per year on clothes. So $10K would be 4 years worth of clothing. Now that I work from home it's probably like $1000 per year. My average dress is $200-$250. And I'm not a shoe person so only 2 pairs of shoes each year. I'm also not a handbag person either.

It is truly wild. Clothes and accessories are like wine- you get to a certain price point and the increase in quality is entirely negligible in most cases. Certain fine jewelry would be an exception to this but $3500 (or like you say $1000) for a bag is irrational.
