With all of those perks I think $53 is very reasonable. It was sticker shock when I received the invoice in my inbox!

I take issue with "admission to the museum" when the cost is $0 for that. -DP

This violates policy. But pay it anyway because you like getting ripped off.

Please link a citation.

I note with an easy web search a memo from a middle school this summer,

"There also may be fees related to field trips, but these will be shared each time there is a trip. Examples of possible fees include
band/chorus T-shirts, Music in the Parks Festival field trip fee, Outdoor Education field trip fee (Grade 6), and End-ofYear Activities fee (Grade 8). "

In general, I believe that MCPS allows schools to charge families for field trips, but they are expected to make these trips accessible to all students, that is to say that students should be excluded due to financial constraints and schools are encouraged to offer financial assistance or alternative funding sources for families in need.

I don't remember Outdoor Ed having a fee? It's a curriculum field trip that all 6th graders go on. The other items I could see having a fee.

Outdoor Ed cost $80 last year. They said they would work with families that could not afford the cost because they wanted all students to attend.

Also, at my Title 1 school, the main trip was to the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore using school buses.

Well - I just took a group of students on several field trips last week from Shady Grove Metro to Smithsonian one day and L'Enfant Plaza the other day. $6.75 each way plus my parking cost (so $20 for me and $13.50 per student), so it's not exactly a steal on Metro either.

Then pay it. Maryland law is clear, but MCPS is in TrumpWorld.

Is the T-shirt for commemorative purposes or just so they can keep track of the students? If the latter they should just ask everyone to wear the same color.

There is no cost for admission to Smithsonian museums. Does the museum expect a donation or something?

That’s crazy! I think I paid $65 for my kid in VA to go to Jamestown and our PTA covers it for F&R lunch kids.

Do you mind sharing the school? Our school is very hesitant about costs re field trips and would never consider this I bet.
