I’m curious for those of you saying uva kids not brightest, where is your child in college?

No way a 4.0 target school is JMU
and yet last year's incoming class at JMU reported having 4.11 gpa at the 75th percentile: a 3.89 at the mean

So yes, reviewing the Naviance data, and more importantly, having the counselor interpret that data properly for your school, is very important. Even if the counselor is a dingbat (as ours was).
The issue, I think, is that at the private schools UVA is harder to read. Parents of DC's friends who go to privates (Big 3, Landon, Gonzaga, Potomac) complain that UVA disfavors their kids in favor of the publics. Those of us who had kids in publics could say the same about the privates (particularly the Catholic schools). Grass being greener on other side of fence, etc. That's why we have so many of these posts in this board asking about the past experiences because the information isn't as available as in the public schools.
I have had a friend that was an admissions counselor for a diff school tell me that they favor public school kids before private as well.

This is crucial. ask your college counselor about where your child stands in class vis-a-vis the other top students; has she taken the most rigorous courses available?; ask to be shown by Naviance or whatever computer system your high school uses as to where she stands vis-a-vis prior students of that high school who were admitted.. Last year the bottom 25th percentile reported having 4.20 so a 4.00 weighted is bottom of the class, where msny of the hooked kids are.

My guess is not positioned well. While the classes are AP or honors, it still feels like they fall short compared to many with prob better GPAs. My DS has demanding & passion sport. My DS did their best to maintain grades while achieving something they love to do outside of school. Looking for a good school that will understand that commitment and dedication to both good grades and EC. It was definitely not easy. Any recommendations both in and out of state welcomed!

Adding that we were told by multiple teachers and guidance counselors at the start of middle school (when kids started taking high school credit classes) that UVA expects all As for admission. Never sure how true this was but nearly all the kids repeat this as fact and it seems like most of the admitted kids from our HS all have straight As throughout.
It is really, really rare to get all As in high school. Come on.
It is not. There are many high schools that have 25% who have unweighted all As. In Virginia. In schools where 90 and above is an “A” (no A-), there are schools with 40% all As. These schools often weight A+ and weight for IB or AP or honors, such that a student at the top getting all A (and indeed and mostly A+) in hardest classes have 5.4 weighted.
That being said, UVA rep came and talked as part of a dean panel at our private school and parents attended: it is weighted gpa on the CDS. They confirmed it. They also said all As is quite common at some high schools and not others; some high schools have 75% with a Weighted GPA above 4.0, others have less than 25% with a weighted over 4.0. They consider students in the context of their highschool and whatever grading system and trends exist there.
UVA is very upfront with this stuff. They have put it on social media and in AMA sessions.
anecdotally: my 4.1 Weighted student was told they were just below average in our public high school. They are at JMU now and it is a good fit but we had no idea 4.1 W could possibly be below average until junior year when we asked. We never should have encourage UVA, we did not have a clue that taking a mix of regular and honors to start of high school would make 4.3W out of the question, which seems to be the bottom of reasonable for UVA in our school from naviance.
