There are actually students who have work-study programs where they go to a job site after school. Driving could be the best or even only option to make that work.

Also, sometimes school ends early for them. So they have a half-day of school and then a half-day of work. There would be no way to do this by public transportation and school buses.

I know students who have done this by public transportation. Obviously this would not work for all students under every circumstance, but then driving also doesn't work for all students under every circumstance.
