What are your husband’s other (non-couch) rules? This is “Sleeping With the Enemy” type behavior.

My teens lay on the couch all the time and sometimes sleep there, even overnight. But I am divorced so don't need to deal with another adult's silly rules.

I've discouraged my family from napping on the family room sofa -- but don't prohibit it. When someone is napping on the sofa I feel like it is making the room unavailable to anyone else and that I have to tip toe around them so as to not disturb. It probably doesn't help that our family room is open to the kitchen.

I don't mind feet on the sofa but no shoes. But my son thinks I'm nuts to tell him not sit on the sofa when he's all sweaty. Teenagers...

We don't wear shoes in the house so putting feet on the couch is NBD. I have no problem with people napping on the couch as long as they're not expecting us to tip toe quietly around them.

I spent many a night on someone's couch in my teens/20s. Not everyone has extra beds.

My rules are no shoes on the couch, no food on the couch. Otherwise, the couch is for relaxing on it.

This part of the rule I am on board with, but the rest is weird. However, I will note that we don’t lay down on the couch often. Maybe a few times a year? If we are really tired. We are pretty active though.

My husband grew up with a no skin on the couch (or furniture generally) rule. If you’re wearing shorts you aren’t welcome to sit down. If you’re in pants but short sleeves, no using the arm rest.

My mom insists that naps must be on couches (not beds) and will nap when visiting someone and get mad if everyone around her doesn’t get quiet.

Neither of us have upheld these rules.

Napping on a couch is lovely. I would wake someone to go to their room rather than sleep the whole night on the couch, though.

You are an adult in your own house. If you want to put your feet up, do it. He doesn't get to make "rules" about how to sit for his wife, that's bizarre. Don't do that at other people's houses, though.

I can't take a nap in bed. Only on the couch or in the club chair.

I live alone and do whatever I want 100% of the time on any and all of my furniture.

I am wondering though, how would a couple arrive at a compromise on an issue like this? I don't think it's particularly appropriate for one person to always get their way.

Kind of depends on how dirty sweaty someone gets before getting on the sofa and while sleeping.
