Any school that has any graduate degrees can claim to be a university. USNWR uses Carnegie classifications to put school into categories. Ironically, the College of William and Mary is in National Universities and the University of Richmond is in National Liberal Arts Colleges. William and Mary has quite a few more graduate programs and more research than Richmond, although still much less than large universities.

Yeah, "quirky" is what people say when they're trying to convince themselves their ordinary suburban kid is somehow different and more special than hundreds of thousands of similar kids.

I always thought quirky was a way of saying nerd or theater kid

Thank you for this. I think William and Mary is a fabulous place with lots to do and amazing kids. I am hoping my son ED's there for I or II. I find that people whose kids "won't consider it" have never visited and simply have zero clue. Sad, really, but what can you do. Happy to hear your student loves it! Thank you!

I have a student at WM who is having a great time socially, lots of options for clubs and activities. Not sure what quirky means, really. The students are smart, accomplished and do interesting things. I guess that could be quirky. Interacting with the campus and some students who have actually gone to the schools of interest is the best way to sort things out

I would consider them peer schools academically. Richmond is smaller and its campus feels like a country club. My student found it too small. W&M has a reputation as being quirky and not as social as UVA. Williamsburg isn’t for everyone. My student refused to consider W&M for these reasons. I’d have your student visit and see if either is their vibe, both are great schools.

It’s a university

The biggest difference is culture. Richmond is more of a southern preppy rich kids school while W&M attracts the more studious, nerdy, intellectual type. The W&M kids also used to have a reputation for being quirky, closed off, and academically intense and competitive but have heard that they have chilled out a bit recently.

Prestige wise W&M used to be the harder admit, this may have changed. Job wise Richmond grads easily connected to the Richmond old boys club; many that I knew stayed in Richmond.

OP here, is this even relevant for athletes ? i’ve heard anecdotally that scores are required for all athletes at both schools - AOs need to keep the coaches honest is the story I’ve heard on this..
